VA to migrate 600,000 employees to cloud email

The Veterans Affairs Department will move all of its 600,000 employees to a cloud-based email, messaging and calendar system over the next five years, says Hewlett-Packard in a Nov. 13 press release.

VA awarded HP Enterprise Services a $36 million, five-year contract to transition VA employees to Microsoft Office 365 for Government, HP said. The transition will begin with an initial group of 15,000 people.

According to the award under the Veterans Administration Transformation Twenty-One Total Technology program, HP will manage VA's move and create a geographically diverse disaster recovery system.

VA is joins other agencies that are moving their email systems to the cloud, including the General Services Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.

GSA currently has 17 blanket purchase agreements with cloud email vendors that predominantly offer services managed by Google and Microsoft.
